Trigger Point Therapy

Picture
A trigger point is a small contraction knot in the muscle tissue. It affects the muscle by keeping it tight and weak and in a contracted state. As a result, these tight muscle fibers keep constant tension on the muscle’s attachment points, often producing pain in adjacent joints as well as in the soft tissue. This constant tension on the muscle fibers of the trigger point restricts circulation in the immediate area, resulting in accumulation of the by-products of metabolism. Deprived of the oxygen and nutrients needed, the trigger points are perpetuated for months or even years, unless intervention occurs.

Trigger points are known to cause headaches, neck and jaw pain, back pain, insomnia, numbness and tingling in the arms or legs, symptoms of carpal tunnel, joint pain, earaches, dizziness, nausea, heartburn, false heart pain, heart arrhythmia, tennis elbow and sinus pain, just to name a few.

The difficulty in treating trigger points is that they typically send their pain somewhere else. Most conventional treatment of pain is based on the assumption that the cause of the pain will be found at the site of the pain. But often times, trigger points send their pain elsewhere. This is known as referred pain. During a trigger point therapy session, the therapist may work on areas where you do not feel pain for this reason.

Trigger points are released by putting pressure on them. It may take several sessions to get them to fully release. The results of trigger point therapy are amazing! Clients who have been in pain for months or even years have experienced relief in just a few sessions. The length of time it takes to feel the results varies from person to person.

If you are in pain, you truly owe it to yourself to try this excellent modality of natural healing. The human body really does have an amazing ability to heal itself when given the opportunity.
