I am an LMT, Reiki Master and Yoga Instructor who began with a focus on finesse over force. As I grew over these 24 years, adding new skill sets, modalities and gaining experience, the purpose of what I wanted to offer became more defined. It became important not only to help people through their trauma and pain, but to teach them ways in which they can help themselves. Understanding how our bodies and nervous systems function can do a lot to mitigate fear and increase empowerment.
Soma means of the body. As a somatic therapist I am not only working with the musculature but with the entirety of the person. The energetics, if you will. By which I mean not only your physical/mental/emotional self but also your present and past. All of your unique lived experience is relevant. When I use the word Intuitive, I am talking about the act of intently listening. I follow the cues from the body that the conscious mind might not be aware of. This allows feelings locked into an area be heard and thereby released of their story. An old injury might be healed but still “holding” the trauma from the experience. What might be an anecdote in our life could still be very different emotionally for the body.
To put it simply, I would say I specialize in injury and trauma recovery, chronic pain and stress management and postural re-patterning. I am committed to being a person of trust for those in chronic pain. I will listen to you and I will believe you.
Treatments are made to meet your specific needs and draw from such modalities as cranial sacral therapy, Reiki, fascia release, cupping and gua sha. Movement and breath work can be included to help provide coping mechanisms and continued relief. Aromatherapy is a wonderfully direct way to access your nervous system and I offer essential oils as well as the more subtle hydrolsols for those who are smell sensitive. Many of the therapeutic oils I use are infused with herbs from my own organic garden that have analgesic or skin soothing properties.
Wherever you are in your life story, I am here to support you.

Somatic Therapy/Myofascial Release
Myofascial Release is not a modality but the result of applied techniques.
ur fascial system is technically comprised of all of the soft tissue (connective tissue) inside of us. This fiber-and-fluid-based system includes what are known as our superficial, deep, and loose fascial layers, as well as our ligaments and tendons. While we often picture our individual body parts as independent structures, in truth, our fascia weaves our muscles, bones, organs, nerves, and blood vessels together into an interconnected and interdependent whole.
Keeping this in mind, a somatic therapy session focuses not only on the problem areas (pain, tension, restriction, emotional trauma) but how those areas effect the rest of the body. The techniques can range from active and passive stretches, cupping and massage, aromatherapy, as well as the more subtle modalities of Reiki and Cranial Sacral based therapies. Each session is unique to each client and is based upon what they need on a session-to-session basis.
Cranial Sacral Therapy
Cranial Sacral work is an exceedingly gentle therapy which traditionally specializes in the head, spine and sacrum but is not limited to those areas. Much like Reiki, this type of work employs "listening" and responding to the subtle anatomy, in this instance the shifts in the cranial bones, fluctuations in the tides of the cerebral spinal fluid. Specific and sensitive finger pressure can have widespread and profound effects on the central nervous system, turning off the fight or flight impulse of the sympathetic nervous system to allow the parasympathetic to take over. In other words, all of the important bodily functions which are so hampered by stress are given an opportunity to do their good work.
To quote Hugh Milne:"A balanced sphenoid bone can correct not just a headache or a TMJ problem, but also an internally rotated foot."
By addressing the position of the cranial bones, relief can happen not just locally but bodily. We are an enclosed system where everything is interconnected. Cranial Sacral therapy can work wonders on specific issues, like headaches, but it also has the benefit of integrating the whole. As such, this type of treatment is effective on its own or incorporated into a somatic therapy session.
Reiki
Reiki is an ancient Japanese healing art that has been in existence for centuries. It is a gentle, non-invasive therapy which works by directing universal energy to flow through the body. Reiki works not only on the physical but on the emotional, mental and spiritual levels as well. Treatments take place on the massage table, with the client fully clothed. In a typical session, your therapist's hands are lightly placed at specific points along the body. These spots are aligned with chakras, specific organs/glands of the endocrine system, and the meridian lines of Chinese medicine. If you are struggling with a particular issue such as headache, or knee injury, areas that carry chronic stress, the therapist will give these areas particular attention. Clients report feelings of deep peace, warmth or a pleasant sense of rootedness both during and after their session.
Reiki can be incorporated into other bodywork sessions as it promotes greater relaxation during and greater integration after a treatment.
Somatic Movement and Meditation Classes
Private lessons are an ideal way to deepen your existing practices or to learn the basics in an unimposing environment. Somatic Movement/Meditation classes employ a variety of techniques from yoga, ballet, pranayama (breath work) and Thai Yoga Massage. The focus will be on stress management and emotional regulation as well as building physical resilience. Each class is structured with your particular goals in mind and can vary from the restorative to the vigorous, depending upon your needs.
In these challenging times it is more vital than ever to find a way to drop below the noise, to become centered in your body and breath. These are your touch stones in a world of digital bombardment, something our nervous systems have not evolved to handle. The intention is to give you tools of self care.
Directed movement is also an excellent compliment to bodywork. Specific postures are used to undo some of the problems presented in a bodywork session. This sort of "postural re-patterning" provides the client with the means to continue the benefits of their session between visits, as well as improving their awareness of what happens in their own bodies which leads to improved health and feelings of self-empowerment.
Your instructor, Tara Hedges, LMT, RYT has practiced yoga in a variety of traditions for over 30 years. She uses her vast experience as a bodyworker to safely facilitate the proper body mechanics and alignment.
